About Our Site

TypesOfBacteria was formed to offer a unique reference point on extensive information and guidance on good and bad bacteria.

Did you know that 3kg of your body weight is solely due to the millions of bacteria that live in your intestines? Or that bacteria can live everywhere on Earth apart from Antarctica? Or that the bacteria that cause tuberculosis infect a third of the world's population?

TypesofBacteria is a complete information resource about bacteria that includes these fascinating facts as part of a unique exploration of the hidden world of bacteria. It is amazing to think that just 150 years ago, scientists and doctors had no idea what caused disease such as cholera or blood poisoning. The history of the discovery of bacteria and the diseases they are behind was not an easy path but it led to antiseptics, safe modern surgery and the development of antibiotics.

The TypesofBacteria site is written in an engaging and friendly style, explaining clearly what bacteria are, how they live and reproduce and how they affect our lives. Not all bacteria are dangerous; friendly bacteria that live on the skin and in the digestive system play an important role in keeping the body healthy. But there are many species of pathogenic bacteria that infect animals, plants and people causing a wide range of diseases.

Find out more about tuberculosis and leprosy. Read up on antibiotic resistance and why it is such a problem. Discover why the plague has killed so many people in history. Learn about recently discovered bacterial diseases such as Legionnaire's disease and Q fever. Impress your friends by being able to explain that bacteria do not cause the common cold. Whatever you want to know about bacteria, you will find it here.

Our concern was that there was no single UK resource for interesting features and practical advice on this subject.

Our features and articles are written by experts - who have experience, or a particular interest in this area.
